If Heritage diesels are more your thing, Diesel Locomotive Driver days are available.

The Experience

These experiences are undertaken on a locomotive from the SRPS’s extensive fleet: class 27, 37 and 47 or (by special request) 126 DMU.
All subject to availability on the day.

Once you have booked your experience, you will be invited to meet a member of our Diesel Group at the station at 13:30. They will take you on a guided tour of the site, including the diesel repair shed. Following this, you will be taken to prepare the engine for the days run and given a basic introduction to the locomotive.

The next part of the experience is to travel on the loco as an observer on the 15.35 passenger service train from Bo’ness to Manuel where you are shown the tasks the train crew undertake and learn some of the skills you will need to drive your train.

Once the train is back in Bo’ness it is your turn to take the controls and handle the loco to Birkhill or Manuel.  Run round and drive back, all under the instruction of our fully qualified diesel drivers.

The experience will be finished around 18.30.

The Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway has been featured in various films & television programmes.

The TV adaptation of author Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander was filmed entirely on location in Scotland including at our very own Bo’ness Station which was transformed to double as a wartime London railway station where two of the main characters, Claire and Frank, say their goodbyes as shown in April 2015. The train used for the filming consisted of locomotive Morayshire hauling some of our teak 1930s coaches which are housed in our Reserve Collection Building.

Other film and TV productions which have used The Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway and Museum as a location are;

BBC Rillington Place (2017)
