Summer Steam Up 2019 – 17th & 18th August
During our ‘Summer Steam Up’, new for 2019, passengers on the Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway have the opportunity to travel in some of the historic railway carriages that form part of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society’s ‘core collection’.
Star of the event, our ‘Caley Special’ features Caledonian Railway 439 class No. 419, returned to service after a major overhaul in November 2018, and coaches Nos. 464 & 1375. 336 years of Caledonian Railway heritage in one train!
Our ‘service’ train will consist of British Railway’s mark one coaches dating back to the early 1950s. Some of these vehicles have starred on the ‘big screen’, including in blockbuster hit ‘The Railway Man’ starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth. We are pleased to announce that this set will be hauled by visiting ‘black five’ No. 44871 on Saturday 17th August. No. 44871 is a former resident of the Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway and appears courtesy of Ian Riley between mainline duties. A member of the home fleet will haul the service train on Sunday 18th.
If you wish to explore Scotland’s railway heritage further, the Museum of Scottish Railway will be open between 1100 and 1630 over the weekend.
Timetable & Fare Information
A special timetable will be in operation over the weekend with six departures from Bo’ness Station. The 1045, 1210, 1410, & 1535 form our ‘service’ train for which standard ticket prices apply.
There will be also be two additional departures at 1320 (to Birkhill only) & 1700. These trains form our ‘Caley Special’ services, for which an additional supplement of £5 per passenger per trip is payable*. Scottish Railway Preservation Society members are invited to travel free of charge on presentation of a valid membership card at the station booking office on the 1700 departure on Sunday 18th August. Please not that these historic coaches operate in their original condition and unfortunately there is therefore no wheelchair access.
* As this is a premium fare train, we regret that discount vouchers, Tesco Vouchers, Complimentary tickets, Season Tickets, Membership cards & vouchers and other discount passes are not valid. Premier Life Member tickets are valid for travel on any train.
While every effort is made to adhere to the published timetables, we reserve the right to cancel, suspend or amend any train without notice. All locomotives and coaches are subject to availability.
“This hidden gem is only 40 minutes drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh. The staff are really friendly and looked after us as we boarded a beautiful steam train, we saw heritage diesels too. The sights, smells and sounds really took us back in time. After a browse around the excellent Museum of Scottish Railways and a bite to eat in the Station Buffet we all agreed we would recommend it to everyone and we would definitely be back.”
