Spend the day with us and have the ultimate footplate experience! Also makes a great gift for someone special.
Be in control of one of our steam locomotives hauling a train to Birkhill and back again. Driving and firing the locomotive you will experience the thrill of the sights, sounds, smell and heat of a steam engine footplate. You will be looked after by our expert and highly experienced engine crews who will ensure you are ready for the highlight of your experience – being in control of a steam locomotive.
We are putting the final touches to our 2014 programme and dates and price will be available here shortly.
Call 01506 825855 or email email@example.com if you have any further queries.
DIESEL FOOTPLATE EXPERIENCE
These experiences are undertaken on a locomotive from the SRPS’s extensive fleet: class 20, 26, 37 and 47.
Once you have booked your experience on one of the dates below, you will be invited to meet a member of our Diesel Group at the station at 13:30. They will take you on a guided tour of the site, including the diesel repair shed. Following this, you will be taken to prepare the engine for the days run and given a basic introduction to the locomotive.
The next part of the experience is to travel on the loco as an observer on the 15.35 passenger service train from Bo’ness to Manuel where you are shown the tasks the train crew undertake and learn some of the skills you will need to drive your train.
Once the train is back in Bo’ness it is your turn to take the controls and handle the loco to Birkhill or Manuel. Run round and drive back, all under instruction full by our qualified diesel drivers.
The experience will be finished around 18.30.

“This hidden gem is only 40 minutes drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh. The staff are really friendly and looked after us as we boarded a beautiful steam train, we saw heritage diesels too. The sights, smells and sounds really took us back in time. After a browse around the excellent Museum of Scottish Railways and a bite to eat in the Station Buffet we all agreed we would recommend it to everyone and we would definitely be back.”
